📖 3-Minute Story: 30 Lessons I’ve Learned Before 30
I love birthdays — aging is a privilege and a celebration. It’s a moment to be like, “hey, I made it out alive this year!” and then reflect on what went well and what you’d like to do differently in the future. And hitting major milestones like turning 21 or 30 is a moment to do more of that.
Approaching the end of your 20s also comes with societal pressure to rush major career and life goals.
On my journey to 30, I decided to keep it simple instead: I chose to go after what I loved and give it my all each and every day.
…and, that ended up being the right approach. I wrote for TV, published my first nonfiction book (and soon will be publishing my debut fiction book!!), was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and then healed it within 3 years (still proudly in remission, baby!!!), and I’m traveling the world with my amazing partner Kyle who is an absolute gem and an insanely talented founder and creative in his own right.
If I went back in time and told 20-year-old Amy everything she achieved this decade, she’d be so happy and proud. She’d also be thrilled to know that I’m currently on a plane en route to Istanbul where I’ll be spending my birthday drinking tons of Turkish coffee and then will abscond to Capadoccia to watch hot air balloons fly!
But all bells and whistles aside, the simple question is this: would the younger version of you be excited by the life you’re living now, even if it’s a little different than what they imagined? If your answer is “yes” — then you’re doing life right.
So while I don’t have everything figured out, I learned quite a bit these last ten years. Lessons I’d love to share with you.
To distill it — here are the 30 lessons I’ve learned before 30:
Without health, you have nothing. I learned this the hard way.
Being a minimalist saves you time, money, and energy. Don’t just buy things because that’s what everyone else is doing.
Stop wearing plastic and invest in clothes made of natural fabrics. What you put on your body matters.
Carry a water bottle wherever you go because hydration is more important than you realize. I recommend the LARQ (affiliate link) as it’s a self-cleaning bottle that’s super lightweight and stylish.
