What it's like to be a freelance memoir ghostwriter, and the perks of telling people's life stories for a living.
“When are you free to fly out to spend time with [name redacted] to work on the book?”
The assistant’s email blinked into my inbox, but it still didn’t feel real.
The year was 2019, and I had just started to make a name for myself as a wordsmith-for-hire.
It was the first time I was to be flown out to meet with one of my clients, and this moment was surreal because just a year prior I had been the assistant making travel arrangements for my bosses in Hollywood.
As I re-read the email, I savored the moment. I was being flown out as a professional writer to ghostwrite an entire book. A type of project I had done before, but that moment felt like my life had shifted onto a new tectonic plate of reality.
I went from a twentysomething assistant in Hollywood to a real, minted, professional memoir ghostwriter — and life was just about to get way more interesting from there.
