This year marks my third summer spent writing from Europe. Unlike last year, I’m not baking under the Mediterranean sun on a sailboat in Greece, nor am I exploring the thermal baths in Budapest.
Instead, thunder shook me awake this morning. The thick summer storms here in Krakow are forces to be reckoned with. It doesn’t rain: it floods. The crackling in the sky shakes buildings seconds after the flashes of lightning awaken grumbling gods.
It’s beautiful — and this weather is what has kept me inside most of my time here as this Polish city cycles between rain, muggy heatwaves, and chilly autumn weather saying hello in July.
In short? I’ve been forced to slow down. And I’ve watched my creativity revisit me in the process.
Slowing down has been my secret to success in the past year: it is what has allowed me to write and revise my debut work of fiction in just under 7 months while also keeping up with my work as a freelance memoir ghostwriter and book editor.
