👩💻 Why Should Writers Care About Social Media?
In January of this year, I was gazing out of the window of my “home office” in San Francisco where I was working remotely for the month.
(Home office in quotes — as a digital nomad my home is wherever I am for the month!)
I had built an extensive following on social media by that point, which would later successfully land my book Six-Figure Freelance Writer on #1 in New Releases on Amazon with the help of my community. (My book is still in the top 100 bestseller list for its category, 7 months after launch!)
Even if you’re not coming out with a book, there are lots of other ways social media can change your life.
Here are 5 reasons why writers, freelancers, and authors of all kinds should grow their social media following:
It makes you magnetic, allowing new readers, clients, and opportunities to find you. I’m able to sustain my life as a writer and freelancer in part thanks to my community here and on other platforms!
Social media can be a substantial income stream on its own. I made tens of thousands of dollars last year in brand deals and affiliate revenue. The important thing here is to make sure you’re partnering with brands you actually love!
Researching, creating, and posting social media content is another creative outlet that can help you hone your storytelling skills. I get inspired when I spend time creating content, and it helps me alchemize my experience and knowledge into bite-sized pieces to help others, as well.
Social media opens doors for sponsorships, collaborations, free stuff, and other perks. Recently, I needed a new dress for an occasion, and a brand happened to reach out for a collaboration at the same time. Instead of paying for new clothes, I got to go shopping on the company’s dime — and also promote a brand I thought was really great.
Social media can connect you to new writer friends and grow your community all over the world. It’s been amazing to meet y’all on my travels. If you ever see me show up somewhere on Instagram just slide into my DM’s. If I can make it work with my schedule, I’d love to say hi!
Social media can be magic if you use it like fairy dust.
So how can writers authentically use social media to get all of these benefits?
